Bloc Party have seemingly been on the precipice of a groundbreaking comeback for a while. A 2023 tour with Paramore propelled them back into the spotlight they once grew accustomed to, as they gear up for a Summer of shows celebrating 20 years.

It’s no secret the band has had more than a few shuffles. So much so, that Kele made a ‘no shade’ comment at their recent Glastonbury appearance. The current lineup consists of Kele, Russell, Louise and Harry. Despite clashing with Kasabian’s secret set, they drew an enormous crowd showing the adoration many have with their tunes.

Bloc Party were one of the most important artists of their time, paving the way for indie music as you know it. It’s a crown they’re close to reclaiming, as they join many early bands experiencing a resurgence with a new generation.

Flirting Again, released 25th June 2024, sees the quartet returning to their roots. Genre-mashing. Electronic. Rock. Dance. It’s more A Weekend In The City and Intimacy than Silent Alarm. But those succinct hooks aren’t left behind. It feels familiar and has an abundance of nostalgia stashed in its bones. All in a good way. There’s even a ‘Fuck the pain away’ reference midway through, from Peaches’ 2002 track.

“We are all carrying around the various scars that we have accumulated over the years, the heartbreaks that have come to shape how we give love and receive love. This song is about picking yourself up and carrying on.” explains frontman Kele.

It’s undeniably Bloc Party. If we took anything from this single, it’s the excitement and real possibility of a new album. The High Life EP last year now makes more sense. Experimentation. A brief window into their creative world. A bridge to what’s next.

The band are in full swing, doing what they love most. Flirting Again is a nod to the past, with eyes primed on the future. It’s a party rocket you’ll whip out when you’re ready to boogie and get drunk with friends. Dust off those dancing shoes, and hijack the stereo.

All Summer shows are sold out, but keep an eye on re-sale tickets here.

Now, it’s your turn. Give it a spin, and tell us what you think on Insta or X.
